Amelia and the River of Lost Souls 

A sixth-grade girl and her friends set off to solve an environmental mystery. 

In the second book of the series, hundreds of people have flocked to eleven-year-old Amelia’s house to see the imperial woodpecker, a bird back from the brink of extinction. As the crowds take over, Amelia patches things up with Jessica and the two friends escape down to the Animas River, the River of Lost Souls, where they discover mysterious things floating downstream. 

Jessica slowly warms up to the awkward Jeffrey, and as the three friends play in their secret riverside fort, they gather clues but are thwarted by the start of middle school as well as eerie ghost sounds haunting the river.

How will they survive the long school days, the pressure to get good grades, and their classmate Laura’s mean whispers? Will they be able to search for more clues without getting spooked by the legend of the lost souls?

Amelia is grateful for her new science teacher, whose lessons on water lead them to discover something disturbing about the river, something that could affect everything connected to it, including the imperials.
